Angelina Jolie Requests Physical Custody Of Children Following Separation From Brad Pitt
Celebrity lives are extremely public, so hearing of a celebrity divorce is hardly unusual. However, when Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, her husband of two years and partner of 12, many were shocked, as their relationship was one of the most high-profile in all of Hollywood. Jolie noted “irreconcilable differences” in the divorce documentation, which cited Sept. 15, 2016, as their official day of separation.
The couple, affectionately known as Brangelina, share six children, three of which are biological. Jolie adopted two children prior to her relationship with Pitt, but Pitt adopted them both in 2006.
In the divorce filing, Jolie requested full physical custody of all six children, only wishing to grant her ex-husband visitation rights. If the judge grants Jolie’s request, Pitt will still have joint legal custody of the children.
“I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids,” Pitt said in a statement to People. “I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
Family law legal advice is often needed from child custody lawyers, as noncustodial parents are required to pay child support in many cases. In a report released by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2013, it was said that nearly half (48.6%) of the 14.4 million custodial parents in the U.S. had agreed upon some sort of legal or informal child support.
However, this is likely unnecessary in Brangelina’s case. Jolie has not requested financial support from Pitt.
This situation reminds us all that child custody disputes are common ground for family law practices. Family law attorneys are available to make all separations, even among celebrity couples, easier and amicable.
Divorces can be an extremely messy, complex, and time consuming process, and not just for A-list celebrities. And when children are involved, the potential for conflict increases dramatically. That’s why it’s so important for each spouse and parent to hire their own family law attorney to represent them and provide legal advice.
